Always Make the Hard Choice is the tenth and final episode of Gremlins: The Wild Batch, and the twentieth episode overall.

Synopsis[]

Our heroes must find a way to reunite if they want any hope of defeating a massive, monstrous force before it destroys America.

Plot[]

As Kung Kung’s storm gains in strength and is noticed in Innocence, Clamp Castle and even San Francisco, the Wings, Elle, Chang and Margot seek higher ground now that the city is flooded. Margot can feel Kung Kung summon all his servants and tries to resist him. Sam wants to trap Kung Kung, but Elle wants to find the missing wishing stones. She and Margot dive into the water, leaving Sam by himself. Then Sam sees his hat and regains his confidence. Along with his parents, grandfather, and even Chang, who now realizes his error, he forms a plan to fight Kung Kung.

Meanwhile, Gizmo and Noggin are still on the train between worlds. Gizmo worries about Sam. When Noggin sees Gizmo struggle against going bad again, he comes up with a theory why Gizmo has these evil episodes; like all Mogwai, Gizmo carries the curse inflicted on him by Fuxi to be a destructive trickster. And that urge will continue to emerge as long as Gizmo tries to be the perfect Mogwai all the time. Noggin states that nobody can be perfect and good all the time, and that Gizmo should allow himself to cut loose a little every now and then. He suggests that they start by hijacking the train to go help Sam and his friends.

In the city, Fong tells her father how she hated that he was always off on another adventure during her youth. Grandpa admits he made wrong choices, and that his wish if he had one of the wishing stones would be to be young again so he could relive all his adventures with his family by his side. While this is not quite the answer Fong hoped for, she still forgives her father.

Chang confronts Kung Kung and calls out the god for supposedly not granting his wish, but Kung Kung shows him that the city is indeed indestructible; any damage done to it is instantly undone. Using the magical trinkets from Sam’s adventure box, and some items they picked up during their travels (such as Calamity Jane’s whip), the group distracts Kung Kung so Fon can trap the god in the enchanted field flask. Unfortunately, Kung Kung is too powerful and takes the flask from Fon. Sam tries some of the bomb-marbles, but they have no effect either. As Kung Kung prepares to attack Chang and Sam however, the train between worlds arrives and rams Kung Kung, causing the god to disintegrate into water.

Gizmo and Noggin disembark the train and reunite with Sam and his family, but the danger is not over yet as Kung Kung reforms his body. Sam realizes that Elle finding the wishing stones is the only chance they have left, and that they should try to buy her more time. Noggin and Gizmo voluntarily jump into the water, and spawn an army of Mogwai and Gremlins to attack Kung Kung. Sam also joins in. As the Gremlins and Mogwai fight Kung Kung, Elle and her mother finally find one of the wishing stones. At this point however, Margot has fully turned into water. With her last strength, Margot urges her daughter to use her wish to stop Kung Kung. Then she disintegrates. Elle wishes for Kung Kung to disappear, and the god is vanquished. His storm vanishes and so does all the water in the streets.

Fong finally admits to Sam that he is ready for adventure. But Elle has seemingly lost her mother forever. Then the final puddles of water that are left suddenly transform into humans. All of them where people that at some point became water spirits in Kung Kung’s service, but now that Kung Kung is gone his power over them is gone too. Margot is also restored to human form. Grandpa Wing summons the train between worlds again to bring all these ex-water spirits elsewhere, while Noggin changes his name back to Algernon and stays in Chang’s city with his new Gremlins and Mogwai, vowing to honor the lessons Boss Chang thought him and rule with love this time. He hopes that the Mogwai can finally learn to live in piece, but even if they can’t, they now have an indestructible city that is far away from any mayor metropolises, meaning they can’t cause any harm. Just before the train departs, Grandpa notices one of the humans has the third wishing stone, and takes it from him. The Wings decide to make New York City their next stop.
