Appearance[]

Hon is a middle-aged Chinese man with short black hair and glasses.

Personality[]

Unlike his headstrong wife, Hon is a nervous man who'd rather avoid dangerous situations. Nevertheless, he will face danger if it means protecting his family.

History[]

Secrets of the Mogwai[]

In 1920, Hon Wing is running the Wing family medicine shop along with his wife and son. When first seen, he is showing Sam how to correctly make the medicine for a customer named Mr. Shao. Sam is told to give his grandfather his medicine. He walks into his room and is grabbed by his grandfather from under the bed. His grandfather tells him that he is growing strong and is given arthritis medicine by Sam, which he does not drink all of.

Sam's mother tells Sam he can go shopping with his father, Hon, which excites the boy. His grandfather says he is inspired and wants to go with his grandson, convincing his daughter to let him go with Sam. He pulls out his adventures box, which fascinates Sam, so his grandfather gifts it to him.

Grandfather explains the rules of mogwai to Sam

Sam's grandfather told them that mogwai have many rules to them.

Gizmo is scared, looking at the other mogwai. Sam's grandfather tells him that there are many rules to mogwai, such as no bright light and never feeding them after midnight. He puts them in a box while his daughter mentions that she believes his stories are not real. Sam's grandfather explained that the mogwai was real and that Sam and he would be heading to Fengdong, which the mogwai had destroyed. Sam's grandfather invites his daughter and son-in-law while people show up at their shop.

Elle knocks while her boss tells her to behave like she works for him. Sam's family hides, and Sam's grandfather says that he could protect Gizmo since he has a kind heart. He hands him a book and says he will scare the people outside who threaten Gizmo's safety.

Sam's grandfather tells the mysterious man that their shop is closed, but the man says nothing closes for him. After talking for a bit, the man infers that he used to be a treasure hunter, asking if he knows the value of what he had stolen from him. He introduces himself as Riley Green, saying he also considers himself a treasure hunter, offering to leave if he gives him the mogwai. Sam's grandfather laughs, saying that he does have the mogwai but had never come home empty-handed during his days as a treasure hunter. He pulls out a spin drum and begins playing it, shooting at Riley's security and at Riley.

Riley swallows Sam's grandfther

Riley turned Sam's grandfather into a pearl he swallowed in order to consume his knowledge.

After the smoke clears, Riley is unfazed, saying he had learned that trick as a child and shooting at Sam's grandfather with something he mastered as an adult. Both clash with magic, but Riley overpowers Sam's grandfather and captures it into a small pearl. Elle tries to escape, but is not allowed to do so by Riley. Riley opens his mouth wide and swallows the pearl Sam's grandfather was in.

Riley and his team hear Sam's family. Sam's father tells Sam and his mother to leave, which they do instantly. Riley's men and Elle follow them through the city. Sam and his mother make it to an alley and manage to escape. After catching their breath, Sam's mother tells him to hide while she diverts the villains.

Locked up, Sam's parents get a message from Sam, which says that he is abandoning his 21-year-old plan. He now has a two-month plan, which would involve getting Gizmo to safety. He also promises to be back at some point.

Sam's parents are taken to a room where they are locked up while Riley taunts them, asking if they are still upset over him swallowing her father. Riley says he would bury them in a ditch but chooses to bring them on his ship as leverage. He reveals that their shipmates would be the other mogwai and tells them he knows all about their son.

On Riley's boat, the mogwai constantly zap themselves as Hon and Fong sit trapped. Fong says they need to leave quickly to get Sam back.

Fong and Hon work on the henchman's arm, trying to sweet-talk them into telling them about the ship. Fong secretly tells Hon that they will not attempt an escape until they get Sam.

On Riley's ship, the mogwai reach the captain's cabin and shut the ship's lights off. The captain discovers and is attacked by a mogwai, who takes control of the helm.

Fong tells the henchmen not to check what is happening, as she and Hon will be doing it themselves.

Riley tells his henchman that they are dealing with creatures that are good at chaos, so they begin to sound the alarm, which the mogwai have taken control of.

Fong and Hon run, but Hon wants to run away from Greene, while Fong says that the ship is taking them straight to Sam, so they need to fight magic with magic. Hon and Fong look for anything magical or deadly in Greene's office.

On Riley's ship, the mogwai begins to attack everyone and take control of everything. Meanwhile, Fong and Hon are also surprised by the appearance of a mogwai in Greene's office. The mogwai starts throwing things at them until they make it disintegrate into a liquid. Another one comes in, and Fong manages to kill it with the ceiling fan. They are approached by many more, but Fong eventually finds a wand that can kill them instantly.

Hon and Fong walk through Greene's ship until they encounter Riley himself. Fong points the wand at him, which holds a bright light, which Riley says means instant death to a mogwai, but does nothing to him. They run away from him, but stop when they see mogwai attacking a henchman. When they stop, Riley approaches them from behind and freezes them.

Riley strikes deal with Claw

Since he no longer had a crew, Riley struck up a deal with Claw, working together.

Using the wand, Riley kills many mogwai immediately and demands a parlay with their leader. The lead mogwai pops out, so Riley says he could take them out easily, but since they took out his crew, he needs to get to the Valley of Jade. He asks the mogwai, whom he names Claw, what she would like in return, and the mogwai responds that the ship will allow her to travel. Riley agrees to her terms, and they become allies.

Riley flies up to Sam and Elle. Elle is tired of listening to Riley and asks him to kill her, but he says that he would not, as he is now a god and she is irrelevant. He mentions he has a present for Sam, telling him that he could not have done it without him, throwing his parents back at him, and saying goodbye.

Sam apologizes to Fong and Hon, saying he should never have left and admitting failure. He cries as his parents hug and comfort him. Elle makes a sarcastic comment, to which Fong responds by yelling at her, saying they do not like her, but Sam tells her to stop as she had saved his life. Elle says that they have to go and help Gizmo, so she calls out to the evil mogwai and distracts them from their attention. Elle heads down, followed by Sam, Fong, and Hon.

The evil mogwai starts dancing and singing together, which surprises Elle, Sam, Fong, and Hon. Sam mentions this strange behavior, which probably indicates something is wrong. Riley turns around, and Claw throws herself at him, hugging him. A mogwai tells Riley to allow himself to accept love since he has always wanted a hug. However, Claw bites him, followed by some other mogwai. Riley frees himself, saying that he is the most powerful being and that they would never win with brute force.

Elle tries to grab her mogwai friend, but Claw pushes him into the portal and closes it behind her, leaving Sam, Fong, and Hon trapped with her in the Valley of Jade.

Riley rises after having taken Nuwa's power and laughs excitedly. The celestial administrator opens the door, saying that he only helps Nuwa with portals, telling him that he knows everything there is to know about him, including that his only power was stealing, which will never really fill his void inside because he was never hugged as a child. This angers Riley and slices the administrator in half. The administrator says he will never help him, but Riley opens up a portal on his own, declaring himself a god.

Riley floats down to Elle, Sam, and Gizmo, revealing that he had swallowed Nuwa, taking all her knowledge. Riley also mentions that he originally intended to take all the mogwai to sell immortality, but he realized that the valley held more than just the mogwai, looking at the knife.

Sam faces Riley

As Sam held the knife up towards Riley, the latter taunted him.

Gizmo and Elle are attacked by evil mogwai, but Sam manages to avoid them and grabs the knife, telling Riley to stand back. Riley says the knife is dangerous, but Sam remembers his grandfather and knows he could protect the mogwai. Riley taunts him, showing Sam his parents and telling him that the knife is very dangerous to use. Sam is now confused and worried about his parents as Elle tells him it was a lie and he could use it.

Since he hesitates, Sam has the knife taken away from him by Riley, who says that he now only needs a taste of eternal life. He takes a mogwai and swallows him, declaring himself immortal. Elle and Sam exclaim in horror while Riley's eyes glow full of color.

Evil mogwai is rounding up the rest of the mogwai in the middle of the Valley of Jade, while Riley mentions that he still wants more, trying to create different things. Claw looks at the blade with interest as Riley plays around with it.

Claw tells Riley that both she and the rest of the mogwai had held up their end of the bargain, but Riley says that being a god had altered his perspective. He tells Claw to consider changing their deal. Riley tells them that he will go to Shanghai, but he cannot have them wreaking havoc worldwide, so he tells them they will stay there where they belong. After that, Riley opens up a portal.

Riley with no hands

After having taunted the mogwai, Riley's hands ended up being removed from him.

Riley is distracted, telling Claw that he had enchanted the knife so that it would magnetize to his hand. As he says this, the mogwai lets an axe fall on his wrist, slicing it off and causing Riley a large amount of pain. As he cries out in pain, the evil mogwai sees that their plan has worked. Riley says that was his magic hand, but he could still use his left hand. As he says this, Claw points the knife at him and wishes that Riley had no hands, so the left hand also disappears.

Riley faints, Claw calls for Gizmo, saying she wants fun, and delightfully holds the knife up. She turns all the remaining mogwai evil just like her, which another mogwai says she was doing to torture Gizmo. The evil mogwai jumps into the portal as Gizmo looks down.

Elle tries to grab her mogwai friend, but Claw pushes him into the portal and closes it behind her, leaving Sam, Fong, and Hon trapped with her in the Valley of Jade.

At the Valley of Jade, Hon tries to tie Riley up, but has a hard time, as the latter has no wrists. Fong holds a knife up to Riley's face, but he says that he can no longer use his magic. Fong says that she would not take her chances with him since he had killed her father, to which Riley responds that he had only reduced her father's essence into a pearl, subsequently getting hit in the head by Fong.

Sam protected by Hon and Fong

Sam was protected by his parents, who were not eager to have him running around again.

Sam, Elle, Hong, Fong, and Riley make it to Shanghai, where Hon says they will never leave again. However, a window breaks, and an evil mogwai enters. Looking through a hole in their door, they see the evil mogwai causing chaos and hurting people. Hon knocks Riley out as he is about to change the mogwai's name, so Fong tells the children to put him in a trunk and fortify the windows. Sam says they should fortify the back door, but Elle says they are not staying since they must save their mogwai friend and escape the city. However, Sam refuses, saying he cannot since he had let him down once before, and everything was his fault. Elle tells him to do better now that they can try again, but Fong says they will stay inside the shop until the danger passes, so Elle leaves.

Sam, Hon, and Fong secure their home with boards that cover the windows so they cannot see outside. Sam peeks outside and sees the mogwai attacking people all over town. Fong comforts him and asks him to get more nails for her. Sam looks at everything he had collected during his adventure and sees a drawing of Gizmo, so he puts on his backpack and heads outside. Sam is followed by Hon and Fong, who tells him that it is not safe for him to be out there since he would get hurt. However, Sam says that he needs to try to do something. Sam is attacked by mogwai and fights them, effectively proving to his parents that he is not the same Sam that they had known their whole lives.

Elle attacks the mogwai at Madame Claw's, which confuses Claw. She begins to use the knife of creation while Elle walks up to Gizmo, releasing him from his cafe. However, she is pushed into the middle of Madame Claw's, and Claw attacks her. Sam, Fong, and Hon use bright lights to distract Claw and the rest of the mogwai, which allows Elle to grab Gizmo and run with him. Sam walks up to Gizmo and Elle, telling his mogwai friend that he will never leave him again.

Claw starts destroying everything in her path, as Fong can save Elle from a falling structure. Sam and Hon see this, trying to lift the structure and worrying about Fong.

Fong saves Elle

Fong saved Elle's life when Claw became huge.

Sam, Hon, Elle, and Gizmo uncover Fong, who had saved Elle's life. She is weak, but okay, so Elle says they should go as they are searched for. Elle thanks Fong for saving her life, but the latter mentions that she only did it to become a better person. Sam says they could now move on to step four of his plan, which involved stealing the clay knife.

Gizmo tells Sam that he could be bait for Claw, which he says could work so they could grab the knife back. Sam mentions that that had happened before, which shocks Hon. Sam says that Nuwa had used the knife to turn them back into good mogwai, but Elle says that Nuwa was a god. However, Sam says they were the only ones who knew what to do. With that said, Sam asks Hon and Fong to return home, as Elle hands them a whistle they could blow if they got into trouble.

As Hon and Fong walk, they see that they are being followed by mogwai on bikes. Hon blows on the whistle they were given, and many kids show up to help them out.

Gizmo allowed to return

Gizmo was allowed to return to Sam and his family by Nuwa.

Nuwa says goodbye to Sam, calling for Gizmo, who says goodbye to Elle. Sam approaches Gizmo and mentions that they could return to their normal lives, even though he would miss their adventures. As Gizmo approaches the portal, he turns around one last time and says goodbye sadly. Nuwa asks Gizmo if he does not want to leave Shanghai and allows him to go back to Sam, saying that she would trust humanity once again and would not be returning if it did not go well.

At the Wing Family Medicine shop, Sam and Elle work as Hon and Fong mention that they would probably end up working for the children someday. Gizmo watches happily as Sam's grandfather asks who could help him with deliveries.

The Wild Batch[]

Eleven months after the adventure in season 1, the Wing family has to deal with Gizmo suddenly developing a condition where, for brief periods, his eyes turn red, and he becomes destructive and disobedient. One night, the whole family has to chase after him when he escapes from the shop during such an evil spell. Sam wants to investigate Gizmo's condition further, and both Elle and Grandpa are willing to help, but Fong and Hon disagree as they have not forgotten the last adventure Sam got dragged into. They want him to stay safe and stick to their new 20+ year plan for his future. Sam agrees to deliver medicines instead, much to Elle's chagrin.

When Sam and Elle learn there are Gremlins in San Francisco, Grandpa Wing secretly helps them to get there through the Bagua room. Fong and Hon only learn about this after the kids are already in America. Both were not pleased and took the first boat to San Francisco. Fong, in particular, refuses to speak to her father about this. When the three finally arrive, they learn from a street musician that Sam and Elle stopped Noggin and his Gremlin gang and are now on their way to find the god Kung Kung. This terrifies Grandpa, as he claims Kung Kung could cause the end of the world.

Never Get Out of the Truck 36

The Wings, imprisoned by Jingwei.

Figuring that the fastest way to catch up with Sam and Elle is with The train between worlds, Grandpa Wing reluctantly takes Fong and Hon to see his old lover Jingwei. She is still upset for what he did to her 60 years ago, and imprisons the Wings in cages. When Hon and Fong learn of Grandpa's history with Jingwei, they encourage him to apologize to her. Sadly, Jingwei is too mad to accept the apology and prepares to kill grandpa, but he overpowers her by blinding her with one of her own feathers, and takes the whistle from her again.

With the whistle, grandpa summons the train. Unbeknown to the Wings, Noggin also boards the train. While in the train, grandpa finally tells his daughter and son-in-law the whole story about his history with Kung Kung, with Noggin eagerly listening in. Then Noggin reveals himself and takes the Wings prisoner. Grandpa however tricks Noggin into releasing him by appealing to Noggins' intelligence and desire to talk about himself. They have a chat over a cup of tea, but grandpa secretly drugs Noggins' tea and the gremlin soon passes out.

Never Try the Cider 68

Sam and his parents reunite.

When the train stops in Purple Mountain Majesties, the Wings are reunited with Sam, Elle and Gizmo, who are now accompanied by Chang. Both sides catch up, with the Wings learning why exactly Sam wants to free Kung Kung, but grandpa warns Sam about how dangerous the god is. Sam believes him and is willing to abandon the plan, but then Chang takes the group hostage as he is determined to free Kung Kung and get his wishes. Elle sides with him as she is desperate to save her mother, and also needs a wish to do so. Chang forces grandpa Wing to guide them past the booby traps of Kung Kung's prison. Hon and Fong criticize Chang for feeding Sam's dillusions of adventure, but Chang reminds them Sam twice saved a city from evil mogwai, and claims it is them who are being dillusional.

Always Make the Hard Choice 83

Sam and his family go on another adventure.

The group frees Kung Kung and receives the three Wishing stones, with Chang using one to wish for his own city. Then Kung Kung reveals grandpa Wing was completely right about how dangerous he is by summoning a storm and trying to flood the world. Since this may be their last moment, Fong and her father have a good talk during which Fong unleashes her years of frustration, but ultimately accepts her fathers apology. Hon sees, this, and the fact that his wife and her father suddenly get along terrifies him.

The Wings try to fight Kung Kung and receive help from Noggin and Gizmo, who spawn more gremlins and mogwai to fight the god. When Chang tries to bail out, Hon stops him. Kung Kung is ultimately defeated when Elle uses another wishing stone to wish him away. This causes all the people who once made a deal with Kung Kung to become water spirits to revert back to human form. Grandpa Wing summons the train between worlds again to bring all these ex-water spirits elsewhere. Fong finally admits to Sam that he is ready for adventure, and agrees to have one more. The family decides to go to New York City next.

Relationships[]

Hon is married to Fong and has a son with her, Sam. His father-in-law also lives with them. Nothing is known about Hon's side of the family.

Trivia[]

  • He and Fong married about 15 years before the start of season 2, as revealed in "Never Take the Tour".
