There's Always a Fortune in the Cookie Factory is the fifth episode of Gremlins: The Wild Batch, and the fifteenth episode overall.

Synopsis[]

It's the battle for Chinatown! But will Chang and Chinatown's residents ultimately choose to side with our heroes?

Plot[]

Margot brings Sam, Elle, Gizmo, and Chang to the tunnels' exit. Elle demands an explanation for her mom's sudden transformation into water, but Margot claims she can only keep her human form for so long and must return to the water now. She tells Elle to meet her at Dock 25 at midnight.

Meanwhile, Noggin begins to search Chinatown for Gizmo. He even allows his Gremlins to wreck the city until Gizmo is found. As the protagonists watch the Gremlins from a rooftop, Gizmo has another one of his evil spells, and he bites Sam when the latter restrains him. When he snaps back to his senses, Gizmo is so ashamed he retreats into Sam’s adventure box and stays there.

Chang leads the kids to a secret bar under a laundry, where he tries to rally the people of Chinatown to fight back against the Gremlins. Nobody is interested, however, since Chang has a reputation for only helping people for his own gain. Disillusioned, Chang gives up on Chinatown and retreats to his late father's restaurant.

Things look bleak, but Sam is unwilling to give up and convinces Elle and Gizmo to do the same. Sam and Elle confront Noggin and pretend to hand over Gizmo, but when Noggin looks in the box, he finds it empty. That is when Gizmo shows up, driving a streetcar. Elle and Sam hop on board and begin to shoot fireworks at the Gremlins to drive them out of the city. The people of Chinatown see them and join the kids by setting off fireworks or turning on the lights in the buildings. Even Chang comes around when he sees the plan is succeeding. With the help of the people of Chinatown, Sam, Elle, and Gizmo drive all the Gremlins to the harbor, where Sam hopes they will board the boat back to Shanghai. However, noggin is unwilling to leave Chinatown and instead orders the Gremlins to regroup in a fortune cookie factory. This becomes their undoing when it turns out the factory also makes fireworks, and with their antics, the Gremlins end up lighting them. The entire factory explodes, seemingly killing all the Gremlins inside.

Chinatown is saved. Chang turns down the chance to become the new boss since he claims Chinatown is too small for his plans. However, he promises Sam that he will follow him wherever he goes next.

Elle goes to the docks to talk to her mom. Margot admits that when she fell into the Pacific, she was not saved by a ship as she claimed earlier, but by some water spirits that offered her to become one of them and serve the water god Kung Kung. She agreed, but now she is bound to the waters of America since Kung Kung is imprisoned in a desert on this continent, and she can only assume her human form briefly. And those moments are becoming rarer, too. Soon, she will be a water spirit forever and become one with water. She has been trying to reach Elle in her dreams for years, but only became successful after Elle temporarily died and was revived. Her only hope is that Elle will set Kung Kung free so the god will grant her a wish, which can restore Margot to human form. Chang, who listens to the conversation, becomes suspicious when Margot mentions “wishes” and quickly corrects herself, but doesn’t say anything. Elle agrees. She sets out to find Kung Kung with Chang, Sam, and Gizmo.

After a long boat ride, Fong, Hon, and Grandpa Wing arrive in Chinatown. There, they learn from a street artist what happened and where Sam and Elle are going next. Grandpa is mortified to learn the kids want to free Kung Kung because he fears this will trigger the world's end.
